Bold new email extortion threat
I often talk about how hackers use social engineering tricks to get people to act quickly rather than think and verify before acting. One such trick is creating a sense of urgency. Well, hackers are taking creating a sense of urgency to a whole new level. There are widespread reports of hackers sending spam emails with the intent of extorting a bitcoin payment with the motivation to pay being a bomb threat hoax. These emails claim that there is a bomb in the building of the person’s place of business and that the hacker will instruct his agent to “disarm the bomb” only if bitcoin payment is received. This is the same type of extortion type email we have scene before, most recently with the threat of revealing the user’s pornography habits as the urgency part of the extortion threat. However, the escalation of the kind of threat is alarming as many businesses will be forced to take the threat seriously (think schools, hospitals, any public building, etc).
